Lean Six Sigma integrates two independently-developed improvement tools:

Lean is an outgrowth of the Toyota production system and focuses on increasing efficiency and reducing cycle time by the elimination of waste.

Motorola developed Six Sigma in the 1970s to improve quality and effectiveness through statistical control. Its roots go back more than 150 years to a Prussian mathe-matician who introduced the concept of the normal curve.

Together, Lean and Six Sigma are powerful tools for transforming organizations. Lean Six Sigma fosters a culture of innovationthat leverages customer input and challenges the status quo, enabling improved results through fact-based decisions. It improves or redesigns existing processes to remove unnecessary work and rework. Lean Six Sigma is applicable to almost any process or operation, from manufacturing to headquar-ters operations like the Department of the Army.

Roles and Courses

Green Belt
The “tip of the spear” in the LSS initiative, manage and lead improvement projects on a day-to-day basis. Green Belts are trained in basic problem-solving techniques and receive regular guidance and direction from Black Belts assigned to their projects, as well as from Master Black Belts when available.

Two-week course provides an understanding of Lean Six Sigma principles and tools and project management fundamentals. Green Belt training focuses on the elimination of waste using proven Lean techniques.

Black Belt
Lead projects under the direction of the Project Sponsor and with the support of the Master Black Belt. They identify opportunities, define and justify projects, launch project teams, lead team activities, track project statuses and results, and develop team members.

Four-week course familiarizes students with the principles and practices of Lean Six Sigma and trains students to reduce costs and improve customer satisfaction using statistical tools.

Master Black Belt (MBB)
Take a direct leadership role in solving complex organiza-tional challenges by leading multifaceted, enterprise-wide or strategic-level LSS projects. Additionally, the Master Black Belt is the organization’s in-house expert for disseminating knowledge among all leaders, championing process im-provement, and training/coaching Black Belts (and Green Belts when appropriate).

Rigorous three-week course prepares in-house experts to disseminate Lean Six Sigma knowledge and training and to advise leaders on employment of available Belts to solve complex organizational challenges. Black Belt Certifica-tion is a mandatory prerequisite.
